The Cliff House
A sequence of excavated rooms at the Irish coast. Compression, corners, and changing light lead towards an open view of the sea.

Architecture by subtraction
The Cliff House explores a dwelling dug into the ground beside a cliff in County Clare, Ireland. Intersecting volumes form a descending sequence of rooms, with narrow thresholds giving way to larger spaces.
The approach begins away from the entrance. A path leads to a narrow staircase and below the ground, where each turn reveals another room. At the end of the sequence, a large opening in the lounge frames the sea.
Light, void, and the route through
Influenced by the work of Aires Mateus, the project studies the relationship between solid mass and excavated space. Sparse material choices allow light and the changing proportions of rooms to guide the experience.
